yeah, i think you're right, actually.
i don't think same sex pairings should require any kind of name or fandom because at the root of it is, i think, someone's facination or fantasy in which they equate themselves into the pairing. I just think its a bit desperate, is all!

I dunno, I think it's no bigger than het romance novels/anime/manga, just that it's specifically refered to as yaoi/yuri and not simply romance. Of course you'll have people that think it's zOMGTHE COLLEST EVAR, but they're usually still kinda young and learning about their own sexual orientations, and eventually (hopefully) grow out of it. My thought, anyway. ^~
